> ...videos recorded by Meta smart glasses were being sent to offshore Meta workers in Kenya for data labeling used to train AI models. These videos included disturbing clips and intimate moments including bathroom footage of users who likely did not realize that their recordings were being viewed by third-parties.

Meta can't resist an opportunity to spy on its users

Bugs happen, but when the public acceptance of a product hinges on public trust, and the public already doesn’t trust you… these things can’t happen.

As it stands, I don’t think Zuck could ever rebuild the trust needed for me to accept these products. Every time this happens, the can gets kicked even further down the road.

I saw his interview with Joanna Stern where he talked about wanting to build trust, and the encryption in WhatsApp, and how different platforms have different assumptions on sharing and trust. But as long as Facebook has the business model Facebook has, I don’t see how Meta can also be the trust company. Things need to drastically change.

The fact that Meta is pushing this is just going to poison the whole product in a huge number of people's minds. I don't think there's any chance that Zuck or Meta are going to regain enough trust to avoid that. (Whatsapp being a good example: despite being far more verifiably private and trustable as a product than the glasses it's still tainted by who owns it now).
