It would seem that in the far future, there aren't going to be Network Cards as we know them today...
No Graphics Cards, no Memory cards, no CPU cards, no AI Accelerator Cards, either...
Basically every PC Card will eventually become it's own general-purpose programmable Card...
Every PC Card will eventually become a general-purpose programmable card with its own memory, it's own programmable processing units, and its own general purpose, high-bandwidth, fiber-optic I/O.
These in turn, as self-contained modules, would be optically connectable with one another at high bandwidth, and because individually they would or could additionally implement the full functionality of a PC or server, they would or could eventually replace all traditional socketed discrete CPU's as well as all PC and server motherboards...
If (at that point in time) you wanted more compute (or whatever) -- then just plug more of them into one another.
Maybe servers/backplanes still exist by then -- but if they still do, then it's only for power delivery and possibly cooling, nothing else...
That's the future evolution that might be possible with all PC and Server plug-in cards...
Anyway, a very interesting article and idea!
